Galaxy of Star tennis fans turn out to see brave Andy Murray mauled

Celebrities were out in force last night to watch as British tennis star Andy Murray was soundly beaten by Roger Federer in the final of the U.S. Open.

Spiderman star Tobey Maguire was spotted eyeing up Star Wars actress Natalie Portman before the action started.

Elsewhere in the Arthur Ashe stadium, Oscar-winner Charlize Theron took in the match with her hunky actor boyfriend Stuart Townsend.

Murray has been star-struck by the famous audience during his run at the tournament.

It had been 72 years since a British man won a Grand Slam title and Murray's fans thought the tennis star might be the one to end the drought that had lasted since Fred Perry lifted the trophy at Wimbledon in 1936.

Fans on both sides of the pond were glued to the potentially historic final against Roger Federer after Murray had beaten Spain's Rafael Nadal on Sunday night.

But the aggressive underdog, in his first Grand Slam final, failed to stop Federer winning the US Open for the fifth time.

The tennis ace has a growing number of loyal fans despite not being the most endearing of British sporting stars.

The dour Scot has struggled to win over English supporters after commenting during the 2006 World Cup that he would support any football team that was playing England.

He has since dismissed that as purely a joke, and insisted that he is very fond of his English grandmother.

Last night’s match against Federer, the current world number two, came after the Swiss player criticised Murray after their last meeting.

In March Murray knocked Federer out of the Dubai Championships in the opening round. But Federer, who has not won a Grand Slam this year, did not believe that his opponent had developed since they first met in the final of the 2005 Thailand Open.

'I don't think he has changed his game a whole lot since the first time I played him and I really thought he would have done,' Federer said after the match.

'He is going to have to grind it very hard in the next few years if he is going to play this way.'
